My Second Best Thrift Find, Summer Hand Stitching, Cold Water Swimming from Canadian Needle Nana

The birds are sweetly singing and the earth is blossoming forth as the old saying goes. What a treat to be in June, even a June that is only slightly sunny with a cool edge to the breezes. And the beautiful flowers don't seem to mind at all. I love my Irises.

And this combination of colours...the purple, violet and deep down, that extreme yellow...
I finally got into another thrift store. And the sentence You need this like you need a hole in the head definitely applied. I have a small collection of dog figurines mostly found ...

Quilty Thrift Bargains, The Prettiest Quilt Pattern, EPP Stars, Me in Complete Comfort from Canadian Needle Nana

How are you?  January always seems like a long month but here it is done. Here is Ned on the trail having a sit and a think about how time is passing by so fast. He's thinking one day I was a puppy and next month I'm going to be 4!

And so we move on to February and blues, but not the moody or sad ones, over at Angela's RSC Party. There always seems like a lot of blues in my stash and they never get depleted. If I did a poll, I bet a lot ...

Why I Don't Mind Extreme Cold and Other Thoughts from Canadian Needle Nana

How are you...snowed in or sweltering in the summer heat?  The new year has started with wild and horrible weather around the globe. Heartbreaking to see devastation on such a scale in California. It makes us appreciate what is a normal winter so far here in the Ottawa valley. Wind chills of over -20 many days but you can have all the gear to layer up and keep warm on walks while out and about. I notice some folks have very fashionable, and what I would call, even beautiful winter outer wear. Mine tends to be more utilitarian and ...

Christmas Signs, Stitching and a Look Forward To List from Canadian Needle Nana

I've got the garbage put out. With the composting and the fires, I usually only have garbage to put out every three weeks but there is always lots of recycling. Realized my Gorilla cart does not do well in snow. It gave my arms quite the workout on the small hills from the basement back door around the house to our driveway.  And I wished at one point we did not live down such a long winding laneway either. But the air was so beautiful, cold and crisp, and I know a little workout is good for me. Then ...

Dark and Damp December Dawns from Canadian Needle Nana

When walking Ned one day, we spotted a Barred Owl. I say "we" because it was on the fence and Ned stopped and watched it too. I took Ned back home, grabbed my large camera and headed out to where I'd last seen it. It had moved across the driveway and then as I watched, it flew much further into thick bush and I could get only so far. I couldn't find it but there was a very large shape in a tree I assumed to be my owl. I knew it was unlikely any photos would be ...

Thrifting, Gardening Hazard, Autumn Slow Stitching from Canadian Needle Nana

The Japanese Anemones are making the late garden shine again this year. A reader told me mine are called "Splendens" and splendid they are! Their leaves are also a pretty shape and shade of green. And the bees love them too.

This patch is the result of transplanting a couple of summers ago. They have spread!

The lovely American Goldfinches have also been plentiful lately. Lots of thistle around the property to meet their nesting needs.
I did get to go thrifting this summer and had great luck. I've always loved Charley Harpers' birds so this book just had ...

Thrifted Summer Tops, Bramble Blooms 1 &2, Twenty Six Jell-o Desserts from Canadian Needle Nana

Just like that, our world outside is a million shades of green.

Tony and Ned on the side lawn

I put a mirror up and saw the robin's eggs have hatched. It is a good spot well protected by the house roof which is also under the veranda roof. I got a quick shot of her. We can now sneak in and out the door without disturbing her.
As promised here are three of  my latest thrifted summer tops. Below is the one I'm most concerned about...such a bright colour with such large blooms. I'm not ...

Thrifted Bargains, Tiny 9 Patches, Knitting Moss Stitch from Canadian Needle Nana

Ned's big brother is staying with us for a little while. Here he's having a chat with Tony. Petey is demonstrating his signature move...how he can balance and beg at the same time. Definitely treat worthy, he insists.

During this week, I've been tv stitching. So enjoy making these tiny EPP blocks.
I found another YouTube stitcher to watch who enjoys both cross stitch and quilting. Laura at LalaDee Stitches. She has a great upbeat vibe and shares much enthusiasm for each of her many projects. She does beautiful work in both cross stitching and quilting ...

Second Best Thrift Find, Easter Feast, Spring's First Flower from Canadian Needle Nana

I get sad sometimes when I see how many folks have stopped blogging; several I had quite a nice email friendship with so I miss them. I guess Instagram is gradually getting more popular, but to me, it doesn't offer quite the same level of communication or connection. I'm going to carry on blogging for as long as I enjoy it. You, my blogging friends, have become an important part of my life!  And it is good for my brain too keeping up with all the little bits and pieces of writing a blog...the linking up, searching ...

Best Thrift Store Quilty Find Ever! from Canadian Needle Nana

Last  Monday was Family Day here in Ontario, a day off work to get out with the family and enjoy winter activities. It was very sunny and we could hear the snowmobiles out on the trails. Beckwith County turns one of their forest walking trails into a skateway in winter and it was in top form.  This is one of the four we walk with Ned sometimes. It winds for over a kilometer through thick woods so it would be a unique and fun skating experience.

I heard my first morning bird song of the season on Saturday morning. It ...

Thrift Store Finds, Taryn's Tiny 9 Patch Challenge Project from Canadian Needle Nana

We've been taking our Vitamin D regularly. The lack of sunshine had been appalling most of the fall and it is continuing into winter it seems. Though today a weak sun is trying to peak through the cloud cover. I just read an online report that a multivitamin a day might help slow down dementia. Wouldn't it be wonderful if it did!
Here is a trio of thrift store finds to share with you as promised... I watched as a lady ahead of me picked up this mug and thought-oh no, she's going to want it.
 But ...

Six Things to Love from Canadian Needle Nana

Six Thursday Things to Love

Finding beauty in Mother Nature's autumn palette
Getting a Special Request
Recently I was asked by fabric and thread artist, Gwyned Trefethen, if she could use a photo of my Red Squirrel in her art work. Of course I was flattered and more than happy for her to do that. Check out her post HERE where she is bringing Red Squirrel to life with thread and fabric. Amazing!
I'm in awe of folks who can do these kind of art works. Like Mary Anne at Magpie's Mumblings with her beautiful landscape pictorial ...

Thrift Store Quilt, Monthly Goals, October Plum Crisp from Canadian Needle Nana

I took this photo of Tony and Ned walking one of the 4 marvelous public walking trails within a few minutes of the house. This is the one where Beth walks Petey and Abbey. We wondered if Ned could smell them. Don't know about his legs, but his nose certainly got a workout!

Speaking of Abbey and Petey, here is a cute brief video Beth took of them. They are definitely lovable Labs.
This strange orange glowing dessert below is my Plum Crisp in the oven light.  I'd bought a basket of small plums and they were bitter- ...

Two More Thrift Finds, Redwork, Free Patterns from Canadian Needle Nana

Old and still beautiful Day Lily and very young Maple tree...

There's a reason cups of tea/coffee are often shown with a backdrop of a cozy quilt/stitching in hoop or/yarn and hook, etc. Our comforts for mind and body are important to us. I honestly don't know what I would do without mine. I also love reading about yours as I think you all know by now.

As you know I also love nothing better than a good poke about in a flea market/thrift store where I challenge myself to see what I can ...

Thrifting, Painted Lady Quilt, Nature's Medicinal Plant, Free Pattern from Canadian Needle Nana

Today is the first day in over a week with nothing on the agenda. There have been lots of appointments lately and visiting too. So this rare day stretches before me- I can decide myself when to exercise, read, stitch, roam about with my camera, etc. and up first is getting this blog post finished.

Below, the Day Lilies and my four pots at the further end of the veranda...I'm awed by the wonderful growth. I've let the wild Mullein grow...that's the two tall plants on the right. The leaves, seeds and yellow flowers have ...

Free Patterns, Lucky Thrift Finds, Slow Stitching from Canadian Needle Nana

It's an interesting time of year here in the north as we can watch the season change.  Each day brings new growth pushing up through even ice it appears. It is always fascinating how quickly the earth turns green once started.

I got to go thrift shopping, one of my favourite kind of outings. I'll share two of my thrift finds with you in this post. One is in the middle of the table there and is that bird. I paid $3.99 for it and I think it was a good deal.

In the photos are Tony ...

Free Patterns, Ned's Birthday, Thrifted Fabric, YouTube Channel to Watch And Learn From from Canadian Needle Nana

This fellow, Our Ned, is two years old!

He is a quiet dog, rarely barks or makes a sound. His favourite thing in the world is playing ball with Petey and Abby; a close second is taking up most of the bed at night for his long winter naps

LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color's prompt this week is to talk about our dedicated sewing spaces if we have one. I have a bedroom converted to a sewing room and love the way I can close the door on the mess as it were. It is small and oddly ...

Two Thrift Store Finds, EPP Lone Star, HST Blocks Galore from Canadian Needle Nana

We've been enjoying much warmer temperatures and sunshine during the days with freezing overnight; the sunshine makes me think of spring and that brightens my mood. Underfoot the paths continue to be tricky early morning. The deeper foot prints are frozen and you can catch your foot in one. My walk has been reduced to more of a creep around.

On last week's list of what to get done was sew another diamond for the EPP Lone Star Medallion.  I got that done and now hope to finish up another one this week. Yes Susie, these are Minick ...

Thrifting Bargain, Cosy At Home, Birds, EPP Pyramids from Canadian Needle Nana

I have been busy. In particular helping drive older grandson to his work which takes a chunk of time out of the day. However, I've paired that chore with visits to the library, grocery store and shops too which works out well. That has also been an excuse to not keep up a few things around here. I've slacked off the cooking for instance and relied on some ready made meals from the grocery store; one a meatball pasta dish that was quite tasty. Today I walked the trails with my bungee poles for the first time in ...

Star Quilt Start, Men's Shirts Quilting, Kindest Autumn Ever from Canadian Needle Nana

Most of the leaves are down.  It's very crunchy now on our walks. The sun is still shining each day making this one of the kindest Autumns I can remember. Btw, we are on 10 acres here and the leaves I show you are on the trails and left as are. The only leaves we rake are the few around the front step area. Oh yes, and Hubby has a leaf blower he's very fond of using though usually for cleaning the garage floors.

Below, Tony and Ned glimpsed through the trees on one of the trails.  The ...
